Couleurs et matières

La matière symbole de L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue est bien sûr celle de l’eau, la Sorgue, que d’aucuns nous envient. Elle bénéficie d’une palette méridionale typique avec une dominante de couleurs naturelles mais intenses et spécifique par la prégnance des verts, notamment la gamme particulière de la Sorgue. S’y retrouvent aussi le jaune intense du soleil, le bleu éclatant typiquement provençal et les bleutés parfois mauves ou violets des monts à l'horizon. En contrepoint, s’y décèle aussi une déclinaison des gammes lumineuses des blancs, grèges, beiges, gris mastic et ocres de la pierre dans le bâti en ville, essentiellement des enduits et plâtres ainsi que la chaleur de la gamme des ocres orangés et rouges de la terra cotta des toitures de tuile romaine et du multicolore des marchés  et des fêtes.

_{The symbolic material of Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is of course the water, the Sorgue, that some envy us. It benefits from a typical southern palette with a dominant feature of natural colors but intense and specific due to the import of greens, especially the particular array of the Sorgue. The intense yellow of the Sun, the bright typically Provencal blue and the blueish of the mountains on the horizon sometimes mallows or purples are also found. Alongside, a range of luminous assortment of whites, greges, beiges, mastic grey, and ochres from the rock in the assembly of the city, mainly coatings and plasters but also the warmth from the range of orange ochres and reds from the terra cotta (baked clay) of the roofing of Roman’s tile and the multicolor of the markets and the celebrations are also discovered.}

Une dominante : les plaisirs de bouche, un aspect central du caractère bon vivant des habitants, les produits et gastronomie de Provence. Un terroir propice à « une cuisine saine ». Les spécificités liées aux produits de la Sorgue (poisons) ont désormais disparu ou sont interdites.

L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue évolue sous un climat sous influence méditerranéenne, se caractérisant par un climat chaud et sec, un ensoleillement remarquable et la présence déterminante du mistral. Elle bénéficie d’un microclimat de fraîcheur grâce à sa Sorgue et ses eaux froides. Sa lumière est aussi spécifique grâce à une très forte luminosité méditerranéenne augmentée du  « soleil des eaux »  (René Char).

À l'échelle du bassin des Sorgues, L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue est installée sur une vaste plaine alluvionnaire, une couronne de monts lui faisant un large écrin notamment le géant de Provence, le Mont-Ventoux. Ville-nature, elle se caractérise par son surnom « petite Venise provençale ». Son paysage est doté d’un « esprit des lieux ». Si sa rivère est anthropisée, elle jouit pourtant d’un patrimoine naturel exceptionnel et d’un écosystème unique à forte valeur écologique.

La situation géographique de la ville est idéale : près de la mer, près de la montagne, près des grandes villes provençales et, maintenant, près de Paris grâce au TGV. Le réseau d'infrastructures est notable pour une ville moyenne comme L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue.

La ville est globalement dotée d’une prégnance dans l'identité des savoir-faire en lien avec la Sorgue et d’une tradition de savoir-faire d'excellence. La pêche professionnelle, un savoir-faire emblématique, a aujourd'hui disparu en tant que profession. Le génie hydraulique, un autre savoir-faire bimillénaire, caractérise la ville, de même que la gestion des eaux. Son agriculture est réputée pour sa productivité et la qualité de ses produits grâce à la richesse particulière des sols dans la plaine alluvionnaire et une irrigation généreuse. L’agriculture, qui n'a cessé d'évoluer et de se réinventer (au moins depuis le Moyen-Âge), est innovante de longue date. Aujourd'hui, l’agriculture du territoire l’islois est technique, performante et particulièrement réputée pour ses productions fruitières.

L’industrie l’isloise est séculaire et a structuré la ville, toujours grâce à la Sorgue, exploitée comme source d'énergie depuis une époque très ancienne via les moulins et les roues, apportant leur force motrice à de nombreuses usines. Cet attachement souligné à l'industrie en tant que marqueur historique ne cache pas une facette industrielle contemporaine renouvelée à travers de l'excellence, des leaders dans leur domaine, notamment une production agricole locale propice à l'implantation d'une importante filière agroalimentaire mais souvent dans des secteurs et compétences de niche. Aujourd'hui, la ville bénéficie d’une industrie, paradoxalement méconnue en interne, et qui pourtant représente 20 à 25% du PIB.

The agriculture which has not stopped improving and reinventing itself (at least since the Middle Age) is long-standing innovative. Today, the agriculture of the Islois territory is technical, perform well and particularly renowned for its fruit grove productions.}
